Hour of Code Week at Gattis

December 5th-9th is Digital Citizenship and Hour of Code Week
Students learned about being good Digital Citizens each day on Broadcast. Ask them about:
  • Monday: Stay Safe Online
  • Tuesday: Digital Footprint
  • Wednesday: Stop Cyber-bullying
  • Thursday: Give credit where credit is due
  • Friday: Balance is Best
In additions students worked on coding to be part of Hour of Code. See the Student Resource page to get to the coding apps.

Maker Monday - Lego Digital Story

Makers Monday in the Gattis Library. Students can come in and build Lego settings, characters and then create a video on the ipad.

iPads Grade 1 Reading Response

Students in Miss Drews class go digital with their Reader's Responses.  After reading a non-fiction book, students find the main idea (take a picture of it) and add details by recording their voices.

Ipads & Google Classroom in Grade 2

Students in Mrs. Thomas’s and Ms. Carlson’s classes are part of the Next Gen Pilot program in RRISD and share a cart of ipads. Here is Mrs. Thomas’s second Grade students working in pairs on a project, taking photos of their finished work, then uploading it to Google Classroom to share with their teacher. Even if the activity isn’t digital, they make it so with the camera and how they submit their work to their digital Google Classroom.

S.T.E.A.M. Fest at Gattis

First annual STEAM Festival was held at Gattis Elementary on April 19th.
Students and community members displayed and lead demonstrations related to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math for everyone to enjoy. This night will take the place of our usual Science Fair. Students in the 4th and 5th grades students all contributed a project of their choice to complete. Several students from K-3 participate, as well.

Mrs. Scalan is combining Art and Technology in her Art Room. Here are three practice stop motion videos. ovie. This was a great way to dive into how to create a stop motion movie.  These 5th Graders were asked to keep Students were directed to look around the room and use anything around the room to come up with a stop motion video. After just a few class periods, here are some of the products.

Here students had a choice of a few math online activites to help them learn the skills they are working on in class. Gattis Library is "Out of this World".

Expanding our exploration of space with many of the free NASA iPad apps. Loving NASA Rocket 101 - younger students build and launch rockets, and older students have to study the mission needs, payload, speed, etc. to determine which rocket is best for each mission. Hubble Top 100 has beautiful photos to view along with information about each.
